The NFL On Facebook – The 47th Super Bowl

Baltimore Ravens wins the 47th Super BowlLast Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET the time had come for the 47th Super Bowl. This year the names of the two final participants were San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens. The special thing about this duel concerns the coaches of the two teams. For the first time in the history of the Super Bowl the two coaches are brothers.

The game between the 49ers and the Ravens could not have been more exciting and thrilling. In the first half of the game, it looked like a clear thing for the Baltimore Ravens. However, in the halftime break the coach of the 49ers apparently found the right words for his players to get them back on track.

At the beginning of the third quarter then something happened which nobody expected. The electricity dropped out for about 36 minutes in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. Thus, this was a further event that has not been there in the Super Bowl history so far. Another Super Bowl record was set by Jacoby Jones. After the power was back the player of the Ravens made a 109 yards run which he ended with a touchdown.

Despite the great comeback of San Francisco in the second half of the game, in the end the winners were the Baltimore Ravens with a score of 34 – 31.

Based on this graph we see that the team from the west coast (Baltimore Ravens) had the bigger fan growth over the hole time period.

After the victory at the Super Bowl the Ravens also had the biggest fan growth (more than 60k new fans in one week).

Taking a look at the interactions, we see how much the fans engage themselves for their favorite team and apparently the victory at the Super Bowl was a special motivation for the Baltimore fans.

Because it was finally time for the AFC and NFC Division Playoffs and there were high-profile games which the fans got to see. The New England Patriots are heading to the AFC Championship Game after defeating the Houston Texans 41-28. For the Atlanta Falcons, the motto of the evening: That was a near miss. The Seahawks have fought to the last minute and it looked as if they would make the impossible possible against Atlanta. The Seahawks came back from 20 points down to take a late lead, but a Matt Bryant field goal saved the Falcons from an embarrassing loss. The game between the Baltimore Ravens against the Denver Broncos was hard to beat. After the second overtime the Ravens won in the Divisional Playoff. The last game on the weekend was San Francisco 49ers versus Green Bay Packers. The 49ers won and will play in the Conference Championship against the Atlanta Falcons. The last four teams for this season are the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons. Here you can see that the Patriots are leading the Fan total chart and this with a large distance to the second place. On the fan distribution (see below) it should be mentioned that the New England Patriots got as many Facebook fans as the other three teams have together.

In this diagram you can easily notice the relative change of the fan count of a Facebook page in percent for a specific time interval. Here we can determine that the fan base of the last four teams grew after the division playoffs. The team from Baltimore books the biggest successes here.

With the help of the PTAT-chart it becomes clear that the Ravens come more and more into conversations on Facebook. In the last days and weeks, the team from Baltimore continuously increased their PTAT numbers. The New England Patriots are in contrast to that. Their PTAT numbers are steadily decreasing. Another metric that should be mentioned in this analysis are the user post numbers, to see which fans were putting the most content on the teams pages walls.
